Gonorrhoea: A general overview

Gonorrhoea is a bacterial infection that is transmitted through different sexual contacts including unprotected vaginal, anal or oral sex, as well as the use of shared sex toys. In a significant percentage of those affected (roughly 10% of all male cases and up to 50% of female cases) will experience no symptoms, making this STI difficult to detect without taking an STI test.

If the symptoms do manifest, they can be rather uncomfortable and gender-specific to a certain extent. They include:

  • Presence of greenish to yellow genital discharge
  • Burning sensation and discomfort when urinating
  • Women may experience bleeding after or during sex, or irregular bleeding between periods
  • Abdominal pain is also common symptom in women
  • Men might notice swelling and inflammation of the foreskin

Despite being a sexually transmitted infection, gonorrhoea can affect other parts of the body aside from the genitals, most notably the eyes, rectum and throat. When gonorrhoea is present in the eyes or rectum, it will lead to inflammation and an array of unpleasant symptoms, while infection in the throat tends to remain completely asymptomatic in an overwhelming majority of cases.

If left untreated, gonorrhoea can become a very dangerous condition, leading to serious complications and secondary infections, including pelvic inflammatory disease, septicaemia and even infertility. In addition to this, gonorrhoea is highly contagious, even when symptomless, so timely testing and treatment is essential in containing this STI and keeping it from spreading.

How is gonorrhoea diagnosed?

Testing for gonorrhoea is very simple – all that is required is a urine sample that will be tested for the presence of the bacteria causing the infection. Gonorrhoea testing kit will allow you to do exactly that, but without having to go through the whole process of visiting your doctor, making an appointment with a specialist, or alternatively visiting a local GUM or STI clinic.

With this at-home STI testing kit, you can collect the samples yourself, seal them in safe packaging and just post them to the laboratory which will then undertake all the necessary tests and inform you about the results once they’re in.

How is gonorrhoea treated?

As a bacterial infection, gonorrhoea can be successfully treated with proper antibiotic medicine. However, over the course of the last decade, the experts in the field have noticed the emergence of new strains of gonorrhoea-causing bacterium which are significantly more resistant to usual antibiotic treatments. These antibiotic-resistant gonorrhoea strains can be somewhat more complicated to treat, but the infection can still be successfully cleared with the use of combination treatment, involving to different antibiotics.

So-called first-line treatment employed across the UK (at the time of writing this article) is the combination of Ceftriaxone injection and an oral antibiotic tablet Azithromycin. In those cases where injection cannot be used (for example, if a patient has severe phobia of needles) Ceftriaxone can be replaced by another antibiotic tablet, usually Cefixime.

The time it takes for the treatment to achieve the desired result may vary depending on the severity and persistence of your condition, but in a majority of cases, two weeks should be enough to clear the infection. At around this time, another STI test should be taken in order to confirm that gonorrhoea has been eliminated from the organism, or alternatively, to indicate that another course of treatment is required.

Why should I get tested?

If there is any reason to suspect you might be infected with gonorrhoea – either because of the symptoms manifesting, or because you have reason to believe that your current or previous partner has been infected, you should get tested as soon as possible. STI test is the only way to know with certainty if you might be infected. By identifying your condition, you will be able to commence timely treatment and consequently prevent any further complications from manifesting.

How to use gonorrhoea testing kit?

Gonorrhoea testing kit will also include easy-to-read instructions on how to use the kit properly and ensure accurate results. By following this step-by-step instruction, you can eliminate any chance of error or misdiagnosis. To give you a quick idea of how using gonorrhoea test kit looks like, we will cover just the most basic steps.

First of all, before opening the test kit, you should wash your hand thoroughly (to eliminate the chance of bacteria from your hands getting into the final sample). After that, you can fill in the request form and the name label which is to be placed on the urine sample tube. Following this, you will need to prepare the urine collection box by pushing the sides simultaneously, forming a box-shaped container. Fill the box halfway while paying special attention to ensure that the first part of urine gets into the box.

By this point, using gonorrhoea testing kit is halfway done. All you will have to do afterwards is take the sample from the box by pouring the contents of the urine collection box into the tube, filling it to 9ml line. After that, put the lid on the sample tube and screw it tightly. After discarding the contents of the urine collection box and the box itself, put the sample tube into the protective wallet, seal it, and place it in the return envelope along with completed request. After this, simply post it to the relevant laboratory and wait to be contacted with the results. This will happen roughly 48 hours following the reception of the sample.
